President Kennedy in Galway 0017.jpg
Photographer:
Stan Shields
Caption:
President John F Kennedy visited Galway in June 1963, five months before his assassination. He landed in a helicopter at the Sportsground in College Road where he was greeted by Mayor of Galway, Paddy Ryan. They proceeded by motorcade to Eyre Square where the President made a speech and was conferred with the freedom of the City. The motorcade then went through the town to Salthill where the President was taken by helicopter from the car park beside Seapoint to Limerick. As the President disembarked from his helicopter he was met by 320 children from the Mercy Convent, Galway dressed in green, white and orange ponchos.
