A team of 5th Year students from Dominican College, Taylor's Hill, Galway, have qualified for the Empire Mock Trial World Championships, being held in New York City in late October 2014, having successfully qualified from the National Mock Trial Competition held in the Criminal Courts in Dublin, a competition organised by the Public Access to Law Organisation and supported by the Court Service. This was the first time that the school had entered this competition so they were particularly proud of their achievement.
The Empire Mock Trial International Championships seeks to provide students with an additional outlet to learn about the law and to develop important transferable skills, such as public speaking and critical thinking. It offers students an opportunity to gain an insight into how the legal system works. The students assume the roles of solicitors, barristers, witnesses and court reporters, to form a team to compete against other schools from all over the world in a mock court case.
The team from Dominican College consists of ten girls - three attorneys and seven witnesses. The trip is already proving to be a great experience for the girls as they are really learning to apply themselves to something that they are passionate about. The girls, their generous parents and teachers have given up countless hours of their time familiarising themselves with the New York legal system, working on the case and fundraising for the trip. We wish the girls every success and have no doubt that they will do themselves and Galway proud!
