Inis O.rr man Thomas A Joyce (22) being presented by Mayor of Galway, Ald Fintan Coogan TD, with a certificate for Deed of Bravery awarded by Comhairle na Mire Gaille in November 1974. While working as one of three lightkeepers unloading goods at Inistearaght Lighthouse, he risked his life to save keeper-in-charge C.J. Harrington from certain death. According to the citation, Mr Harrington fell head over heels down the cliff rail incline when Mr Joyce stepped out, grabbed him and slowed the fall. .Had it not been for Mr. Joyce.s action, there is no doubt that Mr. Harrington would have continued to fall down the smooth concrete incline railway and been killed on striking the concrete wall at the bottom of the rock,. it added.
